The autonumber Field is used for sequentially numbering instances of one or more Item Types automatically. It may only be set once for each instance of an Item, and always takes a value one greater than the value the previous instance took.
The autonumber Field may be set to start at any value the user desires. However, this setting only takes effect if no instances of that autonumber Field have been set in the current environment. Further information can be found in Autonumber Settings.
By default, the autonumber Field will start at 1. This setting can be changed in Autonumber Settings.
The autonumber Field is set in one of two ways. If the Field has not been set for the current instance of an Item and the Field is displayed on a Layout that gets saved, the autonumber Field takes the next available number. The other way is by using Actions: if the autonumber has not been set for the current instance of an Item, if any value is set to save into the autonumber through Actions, the autonumber field takes the next available number.
The autonumber Field has only one output format, which returns the number stored in the Field.
The autonumber Field can be filtered by any of the eight standard number-type filters.
