Bar Code

The bar code Field allows the creation of one-dimensional Code 39 and two-dimensional PDF417 bar codes. Bar codes are useful to allow data input without manually entering the information. Many companies use bar codes to represent employee numbers, work order numbers, workstations, and much more.

Bar Code Settings

One-dimensional bar codes represent one piece of data, and the bar code field can either store this datum or reference another field for the datum. Two-dimensional bar codes represent up to 30 individual pieces of data, and must reference other Fields for this data. These settings can be changed in Bar Code Settings.

Common Settings

Automations and Defaults

By default, one-dimensional barcodes are set to store the datum internally. The default height of a Code 39 Barcode is set to 70 pixels.

Input and Form Elements

For one-dimensional bar codes set to store their data internally, when in add or edit mode, simply type in the text to be stored. Saving the text will automatically generate the bar code. For one-dimensional bar codes set to look up their data elsewhere and all two-dimensional bar codes, the bar codes' data depends on what is entered into the fields from which the bar codes obtain that data. So, to set data in such a bar code, you must set data in those fields from which it obtains its data.

Parts

Depending upon the type of bar code, there may be a different number of Field Parts. See Bar Code Settings for more information.

Output Formats

Bar codes have only one output format, which returns an HTML tag that will show the image of the bar code.

Filters

The bar code Field Type can be filtered based on the stored text in the bar code Field. This filter will be useless, though, if the bar code is set to look up its data from another source. Thus, it is nonfunctional to try to filter any two-dimensional bar codes or any one-dimensional bar codes who don't store their datum internally.

Modes

Regardless of in which mode a bar code Field's Layout is, the bar code image will be shown if data exists. When in add or edit mode, though, any one-dimensional bar codes set to store data internally will show a text box in which to enter the data the bar code is to store.
