Item Association

Item Type Association refers to the structure of how the Building Blocks of your application are grouped together.

Item Type Assocation is often referred to in a way that is not technically correct: “Item Association”. This is because Blocks are never associated with an Item but with an Item Type. Item Association is very different from context.

For the most part, this structure exists to facilitate logical search and retrieval of existing Building Blocks, or extraction/merger of Building Blocks from/into your application.

The general structure of all applications is as follows;

  1. Application
  2. Item Types
  3. All other blocks, associated with the above Item Types.

It is possible for a Building Block to be associated with more then one item type, although the need for this should be rare.

Typically, an Item Type Association is made at the time a new Building Block is created, and this is usually performed automatically based on the context in which the new Building Block is created. In other words, if context dictates that a new Block is “about” a particular Item of some Type, then WorkXpress will automatically “associate” this new Block with that same Item Type.

Item Type Association can be changed, usually from within the Block Editor tool.
