Application Space and Application Workspace

Application Space - The interface presented to users of a testing or production application, commonly referred to as a “Page” or “Webpage”. Also accessible by turning off the build Tools for a development application's Workspace. Application Workspace - The same interface as above but for an application in a development role with the WorkXpress build Tools enabled. The Application Space is where your application is used. The Application Workspace is where your application is created.

Overview

There are two fundamental types of pages, they are “inline” or “popup”. Each new Project automaticaly has a “main menu” Page. The context for that page is “Application (an Item)”.

Creation

How to Create

The Application Space is created automatically whenever you create a new project. In fact, all WorkXpress pages are simply Layouts of type “Page”, and therefore the first page is created for you automatically in your new project. Subsequent pages can be created by the builder at any time.

Pages are launched by Actions of type “Layout - Open Page”. The most common way to create a new page is to:

  1. Create a new Link (A Field)
  2. Launch the Events Manager for that link
  3. Create an Open Page Action, “on click”
  4. Select an existing page, or choose <+add new page> and follow the instructions therein.

Wizard Questions

When creating a new page from within an Open Page Action, a wizard will ask you which Item Type the page you are opening is about, and then will present you with a list of pages available for that Item Type. If you select “<+add new page>” the wizard will facilitate the creation of this page for you.

Automations

When a new page is created, some automation will occur. First, a Page Header (a Layout) will be created automatically. The page header will be formatted differently depending whether the page is inline or in a popup, based on common web usage concepts. Additionally, some decisions will be made about starting mode. All these decisions are reversible through the Layout - Page settings.

Usage

When opening a new Project for the first time, the main menu will be available, in addition to any pages added when the component file, “WorkXpress Core” is merged into your project automatically.

You will have immediate access to your Application Workspace. In order to convert your Workspace to an Application Space, you will need to disable the build Tools.

Your main menu page is given the context of “Application”. Each layout within the page then is by default about your application. Through the addition of new Building Blocks, future pages can have their context changed.

Construction of your application now simply requires the addition of structure inside of your application space, namely Layouts and Fields.

Settings

There are no settings native to your Application Space.
