OVF Compliance Overview

The WorkXpress platform as a service (PaaS) and all associated applications built within WorkXpress are compliant with the Open Virtual Machine Format Specification (the OVF).

About the OVF

Open Virtualization Format (OVF) is an open standard for packaging and distributing virtual appliances, or, more generally, software to be run in virtual machines (VMs). Originally defined by ostensible competitors in the virtualization market (VMware and XenSource), it now enjoys broad industry support under the standards management process of the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF). Supporting vendors offering compliant virtualization products include VMware, XenSource, IBM, Microsoft, Dell, HP, Citrix, and more.

The WorkXpress OVF Package

The WorkXpress Platform as a Service is packaged into an OVF compliant image for distribution to a cloud provider of your choice. At the current time, all cloud environments must be OVF compliant. The process of deploying a WorkXpress application to another cloud is very easy, but may require a few hours for large file transfer depending on the arrangements your cloud provider has with WorkXpress. The end result is an easy to use, relatively fast and flexible mechanism for provisioning WorkXpress applications or application clusters without programming.

Strategic Significance

For Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), rapid development of SaaS applications in WorkXpress that inherently support VM technology provides for low infrastructure deployment cost and infinite scalability. OVF packaging delivers rapid deployment to a wide range of managed service provider infrastructures. Managed service providers defining and developing new offerings optimized for cloud infrastructure are assured of a VM independent Platform as a Service (PaaS) component by choosing WorkXpress.
